TASKS:
- Establish the counterargument and the argument in Hauerwas’s piece.
- Discuss the implications of his points about ID and suffering.
CLASS DISCUSSION:
Stanley Hauerwas (1940 - )
- Christian ethicist
- What position is Hauerwas arguing against?
Counterargument
- PWID are unwanted because they (and
their families) must suffer a lot.
- And suffering must be categorically
eliminated.
- We need to be more comfortable
“being with” rather than “doing for”:
does not erase the difference. Does not
reduce PWID down to ID.
H’s Argument
- (some) Suffering is inescapable -
because we have needs and we are
interdependent.
- BUT, not all suffering is
meaningful and is to be
embraced.
- Being vulnerable allows for a
certain amount of pain.
- PWID remind us that we are
interdependent and needy.
- Resentment?
- To a large extent, we are projecting
our views of suffering onto PWID, but
ironically this reinforces social stigma
and can add to suffering.
What is Hauerwas saying about eliminating suffering categorically?
- It’s not like cancer. You can't just fix it with medicine (only some cancers).
- The only way to eliminate it is when the individual dies.
