PSYC2242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Lake Wobegon, Hazel Rose Markus, Chazal
Document Summary
Said that the self is really a schema, which is a cognitive mechanism for processing information (as opposed to just a bin" that you fill with information, which is a concept). This somehow allows us to organize a stream of information. Ex. a novel plot and characters. You are looking for certain things in how to read a novel. You learn how to deal with this kind of information. So, the self is a schema for dealing with information. Whereas with a concept/category, something is either in or out of it. We develop a schema about the self, which allows interpretation of the self. This also interprets the past and predicts the future (in terms of your story) Something happens to you and you integrate it into how you think your future will go. Not just a list of traits (like what you thought of with kelly"s list of personal constructs) but context-specific. With parents, i am loving and obedient.
