Document Summary

Done with psychoanalytic thinking introduce humanistic approach! (third force) Meant to be an alternative to behaviorism and psychoanalytic/psychodynamic thinking. That is why it was called a (cid:1445)third force(cid:1446) a third way of thinking. Thought of behaviorism and psychoanalytic thinking as a negative view of humans. B: humans are sort of like rats. P: humans are driven by base instincts (lust, etc. ) Both b and p saw people as determined within a universe of cause and effect. Humans are just part of that universe. Wanted to think of humans outside of that deterministic cause and effect determinism. Instead think of them as rational informed choices, purposeful, autonomous (able to rise above and beyond of experience in the past) Job of therapist is not to set up conditioning (behaviorism), stimulus or rewards, etc. Nor is it to interpret childhood traumas and manipulate the person . Rather, quite different view of the person not as a patient (medical model) but as a client.
