Document Summary

Socrates is trying to define education and it"s desirability (or lack thereof) so he creates the allegory of the cave. So the cave story is hella confusing. Also in the cave are puppeteers and the light source comes from behind them in the form of fire. Then, one day one of the prisoners is forcibly removed from his seat and sent past the fire above the ground. The sight burns his eyes and for awhile he is blinded. He is forced to look at everything and is told everything he knew was a lie. Eventually he feels sorry for his friends who don"t know the beauty of the world above and is forced back down where he tries to release the other prisoners and teach them about the world. However because he can no longer see the shapes on the wall or guess the patterns they fear their eyes will be corrupted .
