Document Summary

Discussion between socrates and his colleagues on what is justice . Socrates disagrees, but says we aren"t ready to declare a definition. Behaving unjustly while everyone thinks you"re just. Doing everything justly, but no one thinks you"re just. Glaucon asks why it"s better to be perfectly just than to be perfectly unjust. Adamantus says consulting the poets could help find justice. During the time poets were experts on morality. Young men were sent to study them. When something is really hard to see broaden it. There are just and unjust people in the city. The city mirrors the soul of men. City is created because no human is self sufficient. Different people are better suited for different jobs based on who they are and how they behave. Army, physicians (people who get sick should have been healthier), government, education (people don"t need to be taught justice they should just have it), entertainment, no mention of women
