EDUC1044 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Dyslexia, Phonemic Awareness, Intellectual Disability
Document Summary
42-50% of all students receiving special education services are categorized as having learning disabilities. Learning disabilities commonly happen concurrently with adhd. Learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities are very different. Students with learning disabilities learn in different ways, but can reach outcomes similar to those of typically developing peers if they receive sufficient services. Students with intellectual disabilities are not expected to reach outcomes similar to those of their typically developing peers, even if they receive sufficient services. Somebody with an intellectual disability may have learning problems, but not necessarily specific learning disabilities. The earlier the diagnosis occurs, the better. By 3rd or 4th grade is the ideal. Particularly important to intervene if a student seems to be learning differently in math or reading. Not enough to just have a learning difference, it must have a negative impact on student"s learning in order to be diagnosed as a learning disability.
