Norm is fasting: used to only eat a few times a week. Some vertebrates eat once a year: big snakes. Meal sits in gut, not being broken down, until regenerate layers to digest it in gut. Regenerated tissue reabsorbs again after it"s finished. Down regulate their gut between rare feedings. Cost: have to eat a lot and a big item and cant move after, must. Only ectotherms do this, not endotherms budget energy for whole year. Endotherms maintain constant temp so need to eat often. Penguins that incubate and watch nest dont feed bc eggs would freeze. Phases: body mass in decline but different inflection points. Body state deteriorates, penguin will abandon egg and feed. Lipid and protein mass: big drop in lipid mass. Burning a lot of lipid and a little protein. At certain lipid store: different starvation phase w different responses. Corticosterone (stress. hpa): skyrockets w escape behavior. Cant store water soluble: pee them out.
