BIOL1300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Richter Magnitude Scale, Rogue Wave, Transform Fault
Document Summary
Richter scale: easy to use, does not do a great job of figuring out the magnitudes of the large earthquakes. Moment magnitude: more accurate but longer process. More destructive earthquakes occur at the surface and near cities. Earthquakes occur along faults we can look at past data for particular faults to get a sense of what might happen, but we cannot predict when and where a particular earthquake will occur. Approximately 2 million people killed by earthquakes from 1900-2000. Most deaths due to two extremely destructive quakes: Many other smaller earthquakes that occurred throughout the century. Plate tectonic evidence was founded during the 21st century new theory. Explain or demonstrate how this zone moves in an earthquake. Earthquakes can occur at convergence zones, subduction zones, and divergence zone. The hypocenter was 6-9 miles below the surface. Q: draw the affected zone before and after the earthquake. The region had experienced frequent earthquakes but not enough people yet for excessive destruction.
