Lecture 10: volcanic hazards today: hazards of volcanoes. How volcanoes can harm or destroy humans and human infrastructure. The same aspects also have significant ecological consequences. Diverse set of hazards caused by volcanoes. Direct hazards: direct impact from a volcano. Lahar: volcanic mudflow (hot magma mixes with water) Indirect: occurs secondarily as a result of the volcano affecting something else. Hot spot erupts loose unstable slopes landslide causes tsunami. Disease can come from malnutrition (result of famines) Volcanic winter : particles remain in atmosphere for years and earth is colder. Cause cause many more deaths than some direct hazards. Earthquake tremors are a warning sign that a volcano could be nearing eruption. St. helens: before it erupted, a bulge formed before gas/magma release. As the magma/gases move upward, an earthquake can occur. As the volcano is destabilized, landslides can occur. Landslides are another warning sign that a volcano could be nearing eruption.
