APSY2032 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Training Wheels, Cultural-Historical Psychology, Personalized Learning
Document Summary
Piaget thought that instruction is more detrimental than providing discovery. Teachers should set up classrooms for different skill development. Developmental stages must be taken into account and instruction should be tailored to the stage of each child. Piaget would argue that when evaluating a student"s progress and knowledge, it is not enough to just look at the answers. One must also look at the process behind how the student does the operation! How is this defined: actual developmental level (tasks that a child can accomplish without assistance) zpd (tasks that a child can accomplish with assistance) Level of proximal development (tasks that a child cannot accomplish, even with assistance: scaffolding: guided instruction by a more knowledgeable peer. Child slowly needs less and less help with the task: learning how to ride a bike: tricycle training wheels bicycle with someone holding on bicycle alone!
