Conrad grebel, felix manz become followers of zwingli, the reformer from. Grebel, manz wanted denunciation of infant baptism. Zwingli called a false prophet, compromiser of the word. Jan. 25, 1525: grebel performs believer"s baptism upon george blaurock. Opponents called them the anabaptists which means rebaptizers. Desired total restoration of new testament christianity. Severe persecution-death imposed by protestants and catholics. Opponents considered refusal to baptize infants to be child abuse and breaking of social bonds. Beliefs: michael sattler and the schleitheim confession (1527) Anabaptists (and then the baptists) will add: Taught age of moral discretion (age of accountability) Believer"s baptism the cornerstone to proper ecclesiology. Ecclesiology is the doctrine of the church. Only professing believers can be church members. Only (rightly) baptized believers receive the lord"s supper. Lord"s supper is a memorial: a symbolic remembrance of christ"s death. Attempted to establish new jerusalem by force. So, mixed beginnings: not all early anabaptists were pacifists. Menno wrote foundation of christian doctrine (1640)
