As christian centers were undergoing stress and tribulation, christianity in the old latin west began to develop. France became the center of a developed christian order: charles martel defeated the invading muslim armies at tours. Under his son, pepin, the carolingian leaders began to press for reform of the church and for a strengthening of the relationship of the church with the papacy. When ascending to kingshop, pepin asked for papal support. Previous kings had declared their authority stemmed from being a descendent from the gods, but pepin was the first to see kingly authority as sacral and was the first french king to be anointed.
