Document Summary

Management of obesity: managing obesity, biological factors- what he says is the focus. Hormonal control of food intake and weight: leptin, synthesized in white adipose tissue, circulates to the brain, triggers satiety- fullness, replacement leptin effective in animals, works slowly compared to when we are eating, no effective in humans/insensitivity. Actually there is a large amount of leptin circulating. So it seems the brain and other mechanisms is insensitive to it: current thought indicates a variety of genes. Obesogenic mileu: availability of food is quite extensive but not an equal distribution of that- food insecurity, food as for profit industry. Least expensive: composition of food, reduction in physical activity, substantial variation in activity levels. Reduced or increase in activity your physiology responds to it: reduction in opportunity for activity. Think about how the neighborhood environment effects activity. Increasing bmi increase in options for interventions: comorbidities. The urgency to managing weight becomes more important.
