ENV 1101 Lecture 13: Biomes
Document Summary
1492 columbus took possession of hispaniola (the spanish island) during his voyage. Hispaniola has wide variety of ecosystems, from arid plains to lush tropical forests. As the island was colonized most indigenous tribes died from diseases and harsh working conditions in spanish gold mines. Haiti to this day suffers from bad ecological conditions. The biosphere is the part of the earth that supports life. Abiotic influences of an ecosystem: (biotic is anything that is alive: trees, animals, bacteria) Two significant abiotic factors that influence the life in a biome are temperature and precipitation. Temp and precipitation dictates the type of biome the place is. As the latitude, the distance away from the equator, increases, average temperature tends to decrease. From equator: tropical rainforest, temperate deciduous forests, taiga, tundra, polar ice. As the altitude, or elevation from sea level increases, average temperatures decrease. Low to high altitude: tropical rainforest, temperature deciduous deforest, taiga (coniferous forests), tundra,
