Document Summary

Can predict product/reactant proportions at equilibrium: spontaneity: tells whether or not process can take place unassisted, entropy: describes distribution of energy in system, free energy. Can also be related to equilibrium constants: kinetics. Determines pathway & how fast to get to equilibrium: spontaneous process. Can occur in system left alone, no continuous external action necessary to make it happen: non-spontaneous process. Cannot take place in system left to itself: whichever direction is spontaneous, other direction is non-spontaneous, ex) Gasoline combines spontaneously with o2 to give co2 + h2o. Ex) combustion reactions are thermodynamically favored but ea is high, so needs large spark to start reaction. Ex) c(diamond) > c(graphite) is spontaneous, but huge ea, so slow that insigni cant: often think reactions proceed b/c they want to reach state of lower energy . At 25: many exothermic processes are spontaneous. But not all! ex) h2o freezing: many endothermic processes are non-spontaneous.
