Intelligence: an umbrella term used to describe a property of the mind that encompasses many related abilities, such as the capacities to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas, etc. Intelligence: a hypothetical construct reflected in a variety of behaviors which demonstrate a cognitive capacity for thinking, reasoning, learning, and adapting. Measurement is observable behavior history of intelligence and testing. Thurstone (1938): accepted idea of g but said that more important are the 7 primary mental abilities that compose. Wechsler (1896-1981): developed intelligence scales for children and adults- felt that binet scales were too concentrated on verbal stuff- so, he added subscales that weren"t verbal (instead were perceptual reasoning), each w/ Wasi is shorter version with only 4 subtests- vocab, similarities, block design, matrix reasoning- is a valid tool- takes 30 mins to administer rather than a few hours.
