History of money lecture 23 (april 25, 2016) A way to signify your status in society: gives you different interactions, different space of conversation, you telling people about yourself and demanding a certain type of reaction. Value in current capitalistic society is related to your ability to command your assets in the future. Other non-coin forms of money (dematerialized form of money: smart cards (similar to the chip in the debit account) They have a separate currency = different unit of account. Can earn these by traveling, buying stuff, renting cars. Can redeem it, and buy things with it. Specialized (status, prestige, comfort, etc. : meal plan card, food stamps, paypal (way to circumvent the banks: connects the seller and buyer) Credit cards are trying to reinstate humanity into the economy. What we think about when we think of (cid:373)o(cid:374)e(cid:455) . M2- mutual funds, savings, money market account, etc.
