Art in europe primarily tried to make sense of the meaningless human destruction that occurred. The notion of the highness of european values is questioned. A situation where it is very difficult to maintain arguments of superiority in western. European cultures as a result of the war. Picasso was the most visible and famous artist of this moment. He is seen taking his frustrations on the european high culture by attacking it in his art. He is starting to make pictures ugly , figures are contorted and distorted, acidic colors. He is making an argument through form and figuration about the state of high culture and attacking the techniques of high art. Stayed in occupied paris during the war. Cannot paint nazis, but you see his work displaying torture, anxiety, and dissatisfaction in order to display the state. Still lives commenting on the hunger and fear of the people, who have to start growing their own food during the war.
