Toward the end of the roman empire there was a series of splitting of the empire. Dome appears to be suspended from heaven as no one had ever seen a dome suspended from such a height. All supporting elements have been concealed using piers. Dome collapsed but was replaced with a more compact and taller version. Architects had to suspend dome over a square.
