PR 680 Lecture Notes - Lecture 28: Informed Consent, Content Analysis, Belmont Report
Document Summary
The unclearness of internet research as a term shows the basic problem with the definition. Internet research can include internet content without a human subject contact, tools for recruiting participants, and intervention. Social media blurs the line between the tool and venue that the internet gives. If the internet is regarded as a process of human interaction, then social standard research applies because you are studying communication behaviors of people. If the internet is considered as content that the researcher is studying as well as web behavior, because individuals aren"t being directly studied, there are no research approvals required. Many people who post content anonymously think their identity is protected because it is anonymous, however, individuals can be identified by things attached to the post that give information about them and their activity/identity. Web surveys don"t guarantee anonymity because information can possibly be linked to documents transmitted through email.
