PR 660 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Crisis Management

6 views4 pages

Document Summary

Crisis response research is still at an early stage regarding theoretical development because the literature is mainly descriptive. Extant prescriptive research: almost entirely based on case studies or accepted wisdom. As the importance of crisis management in an organization increases, the research needs to provide a solid foundation by producing more rigor as a researcher. Crisis response research is divided into two categories (reflecting different emphasis): form and content. For example, this is when crisis managers are told they need to respond quickly. Content: talks about what is actually said in the messages. For instance, this happens when crisis managers are told to express some sort of sympathy for crisis victims. Situational crisis communication theory (scct): this is a prescriptive system that matches crisis responses to their crisis situation. It is used to organize the content research discussion and provides a foundation for explaining future research/theory development.
