Good enough food & a good quantity of good that it will make the dog salivate. Timing between the neutral stimulus & the unconditioned stimulus. Ring the bell > . 5 seconds > serve the dog food. Number of pairings between the three variables. Sound bell > give dog food > make it salivate. Extinction: after you stop giving the dog food, it will learn that the bell does not symbolize food anymore. Spontaneous recovery: happens during extinction; after a while when the dog has stopped salivating, it may just randomly happen again.
