MGT 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 88: Groupthink, Perfect Number, Group Polarization
Document Summary
People who have a position different from the majority that is dominant are under pressure to withhold, suppress, or modify how they actually feel and believe. As group members, we think it"s better and more pleasant to agree with each other because you"re a positive part of the group. This is true even if disruption might improve the effectiveness of the group. Groups focused more on performance instead of learning will more than likely be victim to groupthink. They are also more likely to fall victim to suppressing and withholding the opinions of the people who don"t agree with whoever is in majority. It happens most when there is a clear identity of a group, when members have a positive group image they want to protect, and when the group sees a collective threat to their positive image. To lessen groupthink, managers can monetize the size of the group.
