5 views2 pages

Document Summary

Group property 5: cohesiveness, and group property 6: diversity. For a group to be highly functioning, it has to act as a cohesive unity, but not because all members of the group think and act the same. Groups differ in cohesiveness, which is the degree of members and how they are attracted to each other and motivated to remain in the group. Some work groups are cohesive because members spend a lot of time with each other, the group"s small size or purpose creates high interaction, or threats externally bring members closer together. The relationship between cohesiveness and productivity depends on the performance of the group"s related norms. If there are high norms for quality, output, and cooperation with outsiders, a group that is cohesive will be more productive than a group that is less cohesive. But, if there is high cohesiveness and low performance norms, there will be low productivity.
