COMM 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Tabula Rasa
Document Summary
Your presentation aid is not the main attraction, it cannot function without you, you should never have to apologize for a presentational aid. You do not always need a presentational aid. A bad aid is worse than none at all. Persuasion- the process of changing, shaping, or reinforcing attitudes, beliefs, values, or behaviors. Know your goal and what you want to change. Beliefs plus values produce attitudes and attitudes influence our behavior. It is a spectrum- realm of acceptance, realm of neutrality, realm of rejection. Create uncertainty: if strongly opposed make audience a little less certain they are right, a little less comfortable with current attitude. Reduce resistance: if moderately opposed reduce opposition and move audience toward neutrality by recognizing validity of opposing side. Change attitude: audience not committed at all, blank slate. Amplify attitude if moderately favorable reinforce current attitudes and help resist appeals from opponents. Gain behavior: if strongly favored get them to act.
