Art history 9/7: fundamentals: emphasis and focal point. Emphasis-an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point. Subordination is defined as minimizing or toning down other compositional elements in order to bring attention to the focal point. Focal point-a specific place of visual emphasis in a work of art or design. Subordination-minimizing or toning down other compositional elements in order to bring attention to the focal point. Composition-the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject of a work. Value- has to do with light and dark. Contrast-the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc. ) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement and drama. Chiaroscuro-an italian artistic term used to describe the dramatic effect of contrasting areas of light and dark in an artwork, particularly paintings.
