The director of a play interprets the page and transfers it to the stage. Director represents the audience members and what they will see and experience. The modern type of directing came with the advent of realism. Inspired konstantin stanislavsky, whose work is at the root of many modern actors and directors. Script analysis- research character analysis, structural analysis. Developing a production concept- the metaphor, thematic idea, symbol, or allegory that will be central to the entire production. Might be rooted in setting a play in a different historical period or location, using non-tradition casting, adding special technology, etc. Casting- must decide if they are going to cast to type or against type. Working with actors on character development and relationships. Working with designers to complete the artistic vision of the production concept. Literal (interpretive), least creative freedom, literally from page to page. try to follow playwright"s original staging ideas.
