Braxton hicks contractions = false labor, starts to occur after the fourth month of pregnancy, uterus" way of preparing for the birth. Three stages of labor : stage 1: 16 to 24 hours: can be only 4 to 6 hours for a subsequent birth. Transition happens when contractions are at their strongest: start out every 8-10 minutes, end of transition the head is starting to show, stage 2: 90 minutes: 20 minutes for subsequent births. Episiotomy: making an incision between to have more space for the baby to come through and then sew it back up: stage 3: Apgar scale : appearance = color, pulse = heart rate, grimace = re ex irritability, activity = muscle tone, respiration = respiratory effort. Newborn arrival : covered in amniotic uid, blood, & vernix, vernix: thick & greasy substance that is supposed to protect the baby"s body.
