Document Summary

Many models have been proposed to understand and explain disability. There are 2 main obstacles for a disabled person. The ideas and attitudes of people in society. There are 2 main models for thinking about disability and disabled people. Disability is a medical problem that needs to overcome. Disabled people should be segregated from normal" society and put in special schools and day centers. The problem is the way that society views a person with a disability. It is all how you view yourself and others. Sometimes, disabled people are seen in a negative way, as being dependent and in need of help and support; vulnerable or weaker in same way. Reality is that we are all intimately dependent on other people, every day, to live our lives. None of us are truly independent, we just need different levels of support. Physical barriers- include the built environment stairways, blocked lifts or access routes, narrow doorways.
