Pathway of light through the eye: cornea pupil iris lens retina, the iris is a sphincter that responds to light- causes pupils to dilate. Retina: thin inner surface of the back of the eyeball, which contains the sensory receptor that transduce light into neural signals. Each eye has a left and right visual field which determines where in the brain that light is going to go. If it"s on the right (cid:448)isual field, then it ends up going to the left and vice versa. Rods and cones: each retina holds approx. 120 million rods and approx. million cones: rods: retinal cells that respond to low levels of light and result in black and white perception. Located on the peripheral: cones: retinal cells that respond to higher levels of light and result in color perception. Focused in the center- determines frequencies of light (color: fovea: center of retina; cones are densely packed.
