Section 1: biological therapies: treatment psychological disorders based on medical approaches to disease (what is wrong with the body) and to illness (what a person feels as a result) there are no instant cures for psychological disorders. Behavioral: believe that psychological disorders result from abnormalities in neural and bodily processes (ex. imbalance of a neurotransmitter/ malfunction of a brain region) Treatments: range from drugs to electrical stimulation, to surgical intervention. Psychopharmacology: use of medications that affect the brain or body functions; good for short term use. Biological problems are sometimes fixed with behavioral treatment, situational problems are sometimes treated with biological treatment all forms involve interactions between practitioner and client psychotherapy: the generic name given to formal treatment. Generally aimed at changing patterns of thoughts, emotion or behavior. Eclectic approach: using a variety of techniques that seem appropriate. Psychodynamic therapy: based on freudian, aims to help clients examine needs, defens- es and motives as a way of understanding distress.
