Document Summary

In-groups: groups to which particular people belong. Reciprocity: means that if person a helps (or harms) person b, then person b will help (or harm) person a. Transitivity: means that people generally share their friends opinions of other people. Person a and person b are friends, then if person a likes person c and dislikes. Person: out-group homogeneity effect: the tendency to view out-group members as less varied than. D, then person b will also tend to like person c and dislike person d in-group members. The power of group membership is so strong that people exhibit in-group favoritism even if the groups are determined for arbitrary processes. Medial prefrontal cortex: especially important for thinking about other people (generally or specifically) also associated with in-group bias; less active when people consider members of out-groups, at least members of extreme out-groups (homeless, drug addicts)
