Mikhail gorbachev (led soviet union, 1985 1991: contribution of dissident movements in the end of the cold war. Includes poland, czechoslovakia, hungary, romania, bulgaria, east germany. All were authoritarian single-party rule, unlike western europe. Eastern europe was held together by a military alliance called the warsaw treaty organization(wto) Western europe"s treaty was known as the north atlantic treaty organization(nato): created during the cold war. It used to be under united state"s control. Dissident: derived from the word dissent, meaning disagree in opinion. Dissident movements dates back to the 1970"s-1980"s, after the crushing of the prague spring the numbers of people who participated in dissident movements never grew large due to fear of being jailed. Czechoslovakia was under control by gustavo husak from 1969-1987. He was a firm supporter of the soviet union. Helsinki accords: signed in 1975. international document concerning human rights. Two human rights specifically mentioned was 1) freedom of expression 2) right to live with freedom from fear.
