Students staged a massive protest in direct defiance of the chinese communist party. Popularity spread beyond student, 1 million people began demanding change. In response, the government sends in the army. People of china were willing to stand up for their freedom. ~700 people were killed, there was repression, executions after the protest. Happened at the same time communism was collapsing in the east. For a moment, it looked like communism was ending, but china did not follow the path of eastern europe. Japan occupied korea, both sides wanted a unified korea. Democratic capitalists wanted capitalist korea, communists wanted communist korea. Russians make kim il sung supreme leader of north korea. Americans make syngman rhee president of south korea - elected. Both want a united korea under their government, both think they should be the ruler of korea, both have powerful allies b.
