HDFS 2010 Lecture 1: HDFS 2010 Lecture #1
Lecture #1 —
-How do we know anything about human development? -
•Research and Theory
-Big Questions -
•Why research?
-to learn about humans
•Nature vs. Nurture?
-both
•How do we define and study growth over the lifespan?
-multidirectional
-multicontextual
-multicultural
-multidisciplinary
-plastic
•What influences development?
-It is HOLISTIC
•biological
•cognitive
•psychosocial
-The Life-Span Perspective -
•Life-span perspective: approach to the study of human development that takes into
account all phases of life, not just childhood or adulthood
•Development is viewed as:
-multidirectional
-multicontextual
-multicultural
-multidisciplinary
-plastic
-Quantitative Data: refers to numbers and are made with instruments such as rules,
balances, graduated cylinders, beakers, and thermometers
-Qualitative Data: use you sense to observe the results
-Nature v. Nurture -
•Nature: our genetics determine our behavior, our personality traits and abilities are
in our “nature”
•Nurture: our environment upbringing, and life experience determine our behavior;
we are “nurtured” to behave in certain ways
•Epigenetics: study of the many ways environment alters genetic expression
throughout life
•Differential Susceptibility: genetic risks are activated and you either respond
negatively or positively
•Diathesis Stress Model: genetic risk is activated in adverse environments (ex.
stress and substance use disorder)
-this has been the predominant view of many health outcomes, particularly
substance use disorders
