BIOL 3200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fluid Mosaic Model, Mesosome, Transfer Rna
Document Summary
Extra chromosomal part of the cell; aids in genetic variation; responsible for cells being resistant to antibiotics: granules/inclusions. Store things like sulfur, may be nutrients that haven"t been used or cellular waste: dna/ rna/ nucleiod. Rna: all three different types are present (mrna, trna, and ribosomal rna) Nucleiod: holds all dna/ rna for prokaryotes: gas vesicles. Used by environmental organisms to move through water (buoyancy: cell membrane: Fluid mosaic model: phospholipids (phosphate head and a lipid tail) make up the cell membrane with proteins (integral, peripheral), carbohydrates, and haplanoids. Phosphate head is hydrophilic and polar, tails are non-polar and hydrophobic. Haplanoid: integrated in membrane; make up some stability for it: mesosome: Folds in the cytoplasmic membrane; increases surface area in the cell: cell wall: involved in transport, size and shape of cells, and osmotic pressure; helps di- vide dna in reproduction, flagellum: Long hair like appendage, used for motility. Polar flagella: two flagellum on one side.
