Document Summary

The interactions amongst organisms in an ecosystem. Predation: predator benefits and the prey is hurt (predator v. prey) Predation leads to coevolution both the predator and the prey evolve at the same time. Predator strategies: ambush/ pursuit (what kind of predator is determined at the molecular level) Marigolds should be planted around vegetable gardens because they produce a toxin that burns holes in insects exoskeletons: commelina erecta has two vegetative components spathe and regular leaves. The undersurface of the regular leaf are caterpillars. On the underside of the spathes they have a hook like trichome made of glass and flexible cellulose which kill larvae: poison ivy has resin ducts. The resin can give people dermatitis: sawe flies- lay their eggs on the tip of the pine needles. They eat the needle storing the resin in their body, when they are attacked they release that stored resin to cause the predator to be unable to eat them.
