PSY 323 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Mindset, Deeper Understanding, Road Rage
Document Summary
Chapter 5: define what a self-concept is and how it differs from self-awareness. Use an example to illustrate the difference between the two concepts. Self-concept is the idea one forms of themselves from their experiences and views. They also take into consideration the viewpoints from those around them. Self- awareness is knowing what one wants for themselves. The individual knows of their goals, characteristics, and attitude. The main difference between self-concept and self- awareness is that self-concept is views from the outside. Self-awareness is shaped from the inside without necessarily outside help. For example, self-concept would be one thinking they are pretty, hardworking, or work well with others. Self-awareness could be that one feels sad about something or wishes they could have a certain type of car: sometimes when we become self-aware, we introspect about the reasons for our attitudes or behaviors. Introspection is when somebody looks inside themselves and analyze their behavior, feelings, thought, and more.
