2/3 of women in prison are there for nonviolent offenses, many for drug related crimes. Property and drug crimes nonviolent offenses- make up nearly 2/3 of the population of women in prison. In the 5-year period from 2010 to 2015, arrests of women for drug violations increased 29% Nearly 2/3 of women in prison are mothers. 75% of incarcerated mothers reported providing the most of the daily care for their children before incarceration. 11% of incarcerated mothers reported their children being placed in foster care, compared to only 2% of fathers: this is one big difference between what happens when a women is incarcerated and when a man is. Most children end up being placed with the maternal grandmother. Women of color are disproportionately represented in prison. White women make up about 45% in custody, black women account for 32. 6% of incarcerated women and hispanic women represent 16% of this population at midyear 2012.
