Document Summary

Augustine is defending the true christian view of the world, but as he"s describing it in book 7, he"s not there yet. He doesn"t consider himself a christian or manichean. He hasn"t arrived at his mature view of what god is like and what evil is. God is infinite, good, not a body, but still a material substance. Thinks of god as having all the normal attributes (classical theist perception of god) Thinks god has to be physically present everywhere. Thinks the universe is a finite thing with finite bodies. Augustine is convinced that god is supreme (better than anything) All the properties that makes something good, god has them. If god is supreme, then for any binary pair of properties a being must have, god has the superior one. For every property that"s better to have, god has it. Need to get away from the materialistic perception of god.
