PSYC 340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Suicidal Ideation, Bipolar Disorder, Autobiographical Memory
Document Summary
Developed to prevent relapse among people who are depressed. Extension of kabat-zinn"s stress-reduction program that teaches people how to combat stress via mindfulness meditation. Mbct combines mindfulness meditation designed to increase awareness of changes in the body and the mind with cognitive intervention techniques. Research shows it is effective and relapse is reduced substantially. Originally created for people who are currently well but formerly depressed. Found to be effective to those with current symptoms of chronic-recurrent depression anda history of suicide ideation. Cbt and mbct reduce cognitive tendency to engage in rumination. Overgenerality effect: re ects the tendency for depression-prone people to recall broad negative memories with limited detail about the self. Helps those who had experienced more than 3 previous episodes stay well longer. Cbt during wide mood swings is effective. Bd clients have dif culty taking medication regularly due to their lack of understanding about their self-destructive behaviour. Educating them about bd and its treatment can help.
