Patients are taught to identify negative thoughts or perceptions about life, devise alternative explanations and then discuss implications for these alternatives with the therapist thereby helping change the psyche of the patient. Assumes belief precedes and causes the distorted emotional response or behavior. Examines behavior patterns which are familial and hereditary in origin.
