In many ways sufism tends to be the part that is the most surprising for most people who are not muslim, this reason is because the religion is considered to be muslim mysticism . The reason why humans are separated is because of their attachment to the physical world, something that is an illusion to sufis they strive to become more than that and become one with god. They believe all forms of pain come from this overindulgence, but once you can get over this you can become one with god, they are trying to achieve.
