ENERGY 303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Enhanced Weathering, Direct Air, Kyoto Protocol
Document Summary
Assessing the realistic potential for using ccs: the important questions. Perhaps, because we get volumes saving by compression at depth. Co2 takes up more space than oil. Highly prospective sedimentary basins (dark grey) great for storing co2. Hmmm this remains problematic and will require careful site selection and monitoring. Can escape in various ways; hard to monitor; we can"t see, smell, or easily identify co2. Injection of co2 can affect ground water and increase earthquakes just like fracking. One other problem with ccs: many sources of co2 emissions are difficult to capture. Pumping oil brings a return when you sell it, but if you"re only putting co2 in and not taking oil out, there"s no return so no one is willing to pay. We can only capture co2 emitted from power plants, can"t from industry, transport, residential and services, or other because they"re widely distributed sources.
