BIOL 430 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Heart Valve, Coronary Sinus, Coronary Circulation
Document Summary
An efficient system that pumps blood to all body tissues. The blood supplies oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. Transports cellular waste products to the appropriate organs for removal from the body. Role in immune system and endocrine system. Wider base lies beneath the 2nd rib. Apex lies between 5th and 6th rib. Myocardium- middle/thickest/strongest layer, needs o2 constantly, coronary arteries and veins blood supply. Divided into left and right sides by a muscular portion (septum) Each side is subdivided, thus forming 4 chambers. Atria-2 upper chambers of the heart, the receiving chambers. Right atrium- receives deoxygenated blood from the body via the svc and ivc and coronary sinus. Left atrium- receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins. Ventricles- 2lower chambers of the heart, all blood vessels leaving the heart emerge from the ventricles. Right ventricle- receives deoxygenated blood from the right atrium and then sends blood to the lungs via pulmonary artery.
