Gestures are the ways in which people use their bodies to communicate with one another. Language is a system of symbols that represent objects and abstract ideas. Sapir-whorf hypothesis: language creates ways of thinking and perceiving. Values are ideas of what is good and desirable in life. Positive sanctions express approval for following a norm. Mores are the core norms that are strictly enforced (e. g. , thou shall not kill) Folkways are norms that are not strictly enforced (e. g. , handshake) Taboo is a strong proscriptive norm which brings a revulsion if violated. Moral holidays : specified times and occasions when people are allowed to break norms. Moral holiday places: locations where norms are expected to be broken (e. g. red districts in cities. Subculture groups whose cultural patterns set them apart from the dominant culture but members of subcultures generally accept the goals and values of the larger culture.
