Document Summary

Each one wired to about 10,000 nerves. Together they form around one quadrillion connections. Creating about 8. 6 quadrillion messages a day. The entire global population makes about 50 billion phone calls, 17 billion text messages and 30 million emails. Axon- passes information to other neurons, muscles, and glands. Helps efficient transmission of signal to other cells. Gaps in myelin sheath are nodes of ranvier. Electrical charge travels down the axon to synapse via the sodium/potassium. How nerves communicate: electrical impulse( action potentials) travel down a neuron"s axon until reaching a tiny junction know as a synapse, when an action potential reaches an axons end, it stimulates the release of neurotransmitters. These molecules cross the synaptic gap and bind to receptor sites on receiving neuron. This allows electrically charged atoms to enter the receiving neuron and excite or inhibit a new action potential: excess neurotransmitters are reabsorbed (a process called reuptake), drift away or are broken down by enzymes.
