4/26/18: Notes on Habermas handout/chart
Looming crises in each system
Economic system: overproduction/under consumption crisis
o Typical Marxist crisis with complication of service sector
Administrative system: Rationality crisis
o state is’t apale of aagig this ireasigl ople ad gloal eoo
State needs to do things like print money, provide transportation
infrastructure, communication
Ex: IRS website crashing, Russian hacking of elections; as a country we
a’t aage tax collecting, elections w/internet
Public sphere: legitimation crisis
o Citizes ireasigl aare that state a’t delier eooi or politial stailit
o Incoherence & irrationality in both realms
o Citize’s respose: grassroots populis l, arh for our lives, alt-right)
Eventually decide the entire system is illegitimate and lose faith in the
system; may start with candidates, but eventually spreads to entire
system
o Play out on interfaces between public sphere & admin system; standard versions
edia of oe & poer ut also aother ediu sste is’t set up to
encompass: solidarity
Reflected in social movements (typical social movements, but also new
ones no one expected. ex: march for our lives). Not revolutionary, but
transformational
Private sphere: motivation crisis
o People have become disengaged from economics and politics
Many forms: substance abuse (dull pain w/drugs and alcohol),
unemployed no longer looking for work, loss of trust in public officials,
lowered civic engagement
