What is psychology: the scientific study of the behavior of organisms, four goals, describe something we"re interested in. E. g. anxiety decreases test performance: understand what is going on. E. g. concentration disruption related to test-taking anxiety: predict the results. E. g. measure anxiety and predict who will not do well: control/application. Control: things we control about a study to get more info. The science of psychology: soft science usually bad. Pseudoscience: makes scientific claims, but lacks scientific methods to support the claim: limitations to the science of psychology: Moral: e. g. child abuse and cognitive development, must use correlation. As scientists, we need to look for evidence: don"t oversimplify or prove a point based on stories, consider other interpretations, avoid emotional reasoning. Biological: influence of electrical impulses on behavior, feelings, etc. Sociocultural: social and cultural rules guide one"s behavior.
