PHIL-105 FA2 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Pathos
Document Summary
Pathos of distance is the feeling of being distant from, the rulers were so far from the peasants that they feel completely untouched by them. Nietzsche uses what you eat and digest as a metaphor but he also finds it as relevant to being a good philosopher and writes books about it later in life. Promising is the ability to vouch for oneself in the future: when we say we are going to do something we need to actually do it. It must have been created and it must have a history of some kind, not born with the ability to promise, we have to sculpt the body in to being about to do this. Morality of custom makes us into responsible people and it is learned from punishment: we don"t want to feel pain, we want to be responsible.
